Porsche Adds a New SUV to the Fleet

This month at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Porsche will be adding a vehicle to its already powerful lineup. The much heralded updates to the 911 will make their world premieres. The 911 Turbo Cabriolet and 911 Turbo S Cabriolet models will make every 911 lover salivate as they roll out. But this year, they have one car, specifically an SUV that is not an update nor a remake.

The Macan, a compact SUV, will become a new line to the Porsche consumer line. It will be shown for the first time at an auto show in North America. Its concept name was “Cajun” -- it had nothing to do with spices nor with New Orleans, but it was considered as the “Cayenne Junior”. The final name “Macan” was finally chosen; In Indonesian, it is translated as “tiger”.

Here are the specs. The Porsche Macan two trims will have engines carrying two six-cylinder turbos: a 3.0-liters in the Macan and a 3.6 in the Porsche Macan Turbo. Porsche technology is doing its best to reduce its carbon footprint with the Porsche Macan’s 254 hp 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine offering 46.3 miles per gallon. The powerful 394 hp 3.6-litre V6 Turbo claims 30.7 miles per gallon.

A possible 2.0 four cylinder model may be available alongside the higher trim six cylinders. The Macan will also be available in diesel engines. Prices were listed on some leaked presentation slides in the US as $52,000 (£32,000) for the Macan and $75,000 (£46,500) for the Turbo. And of course, as an SUV, it will come with four wheel drive.

There are still plenty of other features that are going into the Macan like the LED headlights, the seven speed dual-clutch box transmission and special-made suspension. All will be revealed in time at the Los Angeles Auto Show when the newest SUV will be added to the Porsche family of automobiles.
